TRACK AND FIELD: Redhawk boys win Olympic 1A, Rider girls second in Olympic 2A

POULSBO — The Port Angeles girls continued their dominance in the long-distance events to finish second as a team at the Olympic League 1A/2A track and field championships.

Port Angeles’ Gracie Long and Sequim’s Murray Bingham each won two events. Long won the 1,600 meters (5 minutes, 23.28 seconds) by 19 seconds and the 3,200 meters (12:03.32) by a full minute. Bingham won the 800 meters (2:03.22) and the 1,600 meters (4:38.75).

Port Angeles’ Kynzie Deleon came in second in the 3,200 (13:03.90) and her teammate Lael Butler came in third (13:05.25.). Deleon also came in second in the 800 meters (2:32.46) and the Roughriders’ also picked up a fourth in the 1,600 and a fifth in the 800, both by Maddie Dougherty. That’s seven top 5 finishes in the three distance events.

Long has now won 20 events individually and as a relay team member this track season.

Sequim’s Riley Martin won the boys 300-meter hurdles (42.31). Riley Cowan for Sequim won the javelin at 156 feet, 3 inches.

Port Angeles and Sequim will compete in the Olympic League 2A Subdistrict at Bremerton on May 13 in a qualifier for the West Central District.

1A Results

Meanwhile, the 1A schools competed in the event as a qualifier for the 1A West Central District 3 meet May 19 and 20 in Renton. The top three 1A finishers in each event qualified for District.

The Port Townsend boys won the 1A Olympic Subdistrict meet, while the Port Townsend girls finished third as a team. The Port Townsend boys also finished second in points among all schools at the event, beating out a number of 2A schools.

Port Townsend’s Aubrey Botkin not only won the 100-meter hurdles (15.36), she was first in the event among all 1A and 2A competitors. Botkin also won the triple jump with a leap of 33-8 1/4 and was part of two first-place relay teams.

Redhawk Seren Dances won the 110-meter hurdles (16.11), the 300-meter hurdles (43.19) and the long jump (20-1 3/4). He also finished second in the triple jump (42-4 1/4). Among all competitors in both 1A and 2A, Dances was second in the 300 hurdles, third in the 100 hurdles and third in the long jump. Fellow Redhawk Nathan Cantrell won the 1,600 (4:45.07) and 3,200 (10:31.19).

Chimacum’s Chris Sevilla won the javelin with a throw of 153-11. Sevilla’s throw was second best for all the competitors in the 1A and 2A divisions.

For the girls, Redhawk Ari Winter won the 800 meters (2:36.49) while her teammate Brenna Franklin won the discus (86-11).

Chimacum’s Jada Trafton won the long jump with a leap of 15-6 1/4. Fellow Cowboy Kayla Gates won the high jump at 4-8.

The Port Townsend girls’ 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams of Franklin, Winter, Botkin and Sira Wines won both events. The Port Townsend boys’ 4×100 relay team of Kyle Blankenship, Gerry Coker, Berkley Hill and Erik Pokorny also won.

In addition to the top finishers, Port Townsend and Chimacum kids finishing fourth also have a chance to move on to the District meet. The fourth-place finisher in each event will be compared with the fifth-place finisher in the Nisqually League Championship meet which will be held next weekend. The better times or distances between the two will be awarded a final qualifying spot in the district championship meet.
