Redhawks relay sets school record

SILVERDALE — Port Townsend plugged a hole and ended up breaking a school record.

The Redhawks were missing their lead-off runner in boys 4×100-meter Thursday.

“So on the bus we recruited 800-meter runner River Yearian to lead off instead, and spent a few minutes teaching him hand-off basics at the meet,” Port Townsend coach Ian Fraser said.

Yearian, Seren Dances, Carson Marx and Koby Weidner ran the relay in 44.20 seconds, beating the record of 44.34 seconds that was set by Zach Wilson, Weidner, Mark Streett and Cameron Constantine at the 2015 Class 1A state meet.

Individually at Thursday’s meet, Weidner placed first in the 100 (11.39 seconds) and Marx won the 200 (23.83 seconds). Dances placed first in the triple jump (40 feet, 4 inches).

The Port Townsend boys and girls teams each lost their two Olympic League duals to North Kitsap and Klahowya.

Eileen Leoso placed first for the Redhawks in the girls 100 with a time of 13.33 seconds.

Shenoa Snyder also won an event for Port Townsend, taking the discus with a throw of 99-06.

“The team as a whole competed exceptionally well,” Fraser said.

“Between the 30 athletes we brought to the meet, 39 new personal-bests were recorded, as well as new best annual marks for both 4×100 relays and the girls 4×400 relay.”

ELMA — Angela Garcia-Moog and Marissa Bailey won events to help the Forks girls take third at the four-team Evergreen League meet at Elma High School.
