TRACK AND FIELD: Sequim boys, Roughrider girls cruise in Port Angeles meet

PORT ANGELES — The Sequim boys and Port Angeles girls won at a four-school Olympic League track and field meet at Port Angeles.

The Wolves boys tallied 100 team points in Thursday’s meet. Coupeville came in second with 67, while Port Townsend had 45 and Port Angeles 40.

For the girls, the Roughriders had 95.5 points, while the Redhawks narrowly edged out Sequim for second. Port Townsend tallied 58 points to the Wolves’ 57. Coupeville ended up with 50.5 points.

Sequim’s Murray Bingham and Morgan Bingham each won two events. Murray Bingham won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, while his sister Morgan won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs.

Sequim’s Riley Martin also won two events, the 110 and 300 hurdles. Martin also helped Sequim’s 4×400 relay team to a win.

On the girls side, Port Angeles’ Gracie Long won the 400-meter run and the high jump, and she helped the Riders’ 4×400 relay team take first place. Port Angeles freshman Emma Albright won two events, as well — the 200-meter run and the long jump. Maddie Dougherty had an interesting meet, winning the long-distance 3,200-meter run, then being part of Port Angeles’ first-place 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams.

Port Townsend’s Aubrey Botkin won the 100-meter hurdles, the triple jump and was a member of the Redhawks’ winning 4×100 relay team.

In all, the Sequim boys won 10 out of 17 events. The Port Angeles girls won nine events while Port Townsend won five girls’ events.

Neah Bay and Clallam Bay also participated in the meet, though their results did not count in the team scores.

Chimacum at Bremerton

BREMERTON — Chimacum’s Chris Sevilla won the javelin in a four-team Olympic League meet in Bremerton.

Sevilla’s throw of 128 feet, 7 inches was more than eight feet better than the second-place throw at Wednesday’s meet.

Chimacum’s Kayla Gates also had a good showing, coming in second in the high jump. She jumped 4-6, two inches short of first place.

For the first time in four years, Sequim and Port Angeles rivals competed against each other on the track in college. Sequim’s Riley Pyeatt, left, a 2022 state champion in the 800 and 4x400, and Port Angeles’ Lauren Larson, who finished second in the 800, second in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600 in the state in 2019, met at the Husky Indoor Track and Field Classic in Seattle this weekend. They both competed in the 1-mile run and both finished under five minutes. Pyeatt, who ran for Abilene Christian for a couple of years but now competes for Washington State, finished 57th with a time of 4:52.23, while Larson, who now runs for Boise State, was 75th in a time of 4:54.85.
