TRACK & FIELD: East Jefferson athletes sweep Nisqually League foes at home meet

Behrenfeld wins four events, sets two PRs

PORT TOWNSEND — Senior Tusker Behrenfeld won four individual events and the Asbell sisters, Addie and Aurin, both claimed event wins while contributing to relay race victories as East Jefferson’s boys and girls triumphed at a four-team Class 1B/1A track meet Wednesday at Blue Heron Middle School.

The Rivals boys produced 121 points, blistering rival Klahowya (51), Nisqually League foe Seattle Christian (32) and Neah Bay (30).

Behrenfeld set a personal-best mark in the shot put with a distance of 40 feet, 5 1/2 inches, edging teammate Anson Jones (40-0 3/8). He also claimed the discus (115-1), javelin (159-0½) and, to top off a big day, he set another personal record by clearing 5-6 in the high jump.

East Jefferson’s distance runners also swept the top three positions in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races. Glen Dawson set a new best time of 4 minutes, 51.7 seconds to win the 1,600 ahead of freshman record-setter Soare Johnston (4:55.35) and Sebastian Manza (5:00.44).

Manza (11:27.8) claimed the 3,200 with Dawson second in (11:34.68) and Johnston third (11:44.22).

Senior Max Allworth-Miles also broke some personal records at the meet, winning the 200 in 26.17, just ahead of teammates Austin Hammer (26.6) and Tanner Haddenham (27.19).

Allworth-Miles also was second in the 400 in a new best time of 54.42.

Jerome Reaux Jr. set a season-best time of 11.95 in the 100 meters and was a part of East Jefferson’s winning 4×100 relay squad (49.22) along with Hammer, Alex Harvey and Gage Barry.

Barry also won the triple jump (33-4).

Neah Bay’s Mahamadou Traore set a new personal record in the 100 in 12.56 to finish third. Traore also was third for the Red Devils in the long jump (15-2) and was part of Neah Bay’s second-place 4×100 relay along with Devon Halttunen, Jaden Halttunen and Leonardo Ruiz-Santana (52.3).

The Rivals’ girls posted 111 team points to dust Klahowya (48), Neah Bay (40) and Seattle Christian (35).

Sophomore Addy Asbell posted a new record in the shot put with a throw of 30-7. Elder sister Aurin won the long jump with a mark of 14-1.

Together the pair teamed with Stephanie Sanchez and Audrey Matthes to win the 4×100 relay in 54.03.

Addy Asbell, along with Kay Botkin, Matthes and Sanchez also teamed to win the 4×200 in 1:58.93.

Sanchez (18.68) leaped past Botkin (20.11) for the 100-meter hurdles victory.

Camryn Hines set two personal bests, claiming the 400 with a time of 1:05.71 and was runner-up in the 200 (29.59).

Aliyah Yearian also set a new best time while taking the 800 in 2:33.09, and Tadu Dollarhide won the 3,200 while setting a record of 13.24.3.

Elise Gardner rounded out East Jefferson’s event winners, taking the javelin by nearly 30 feet at 94-7.

Koren Cumming won the triple jump for Neah Bay with a new-record leap of 24-9. Red Devils teammate Bethany McKee also set a new best distance. The eighth-grader was just 7 inches behind Cumming in 24-2.

East Jefferson will compete at Saturday’s 62nd Shelton Invitational.

Neah Bay will run, leap and throw at the North Olympic League Championship at Crescent next Friday.
