ADNA — Heartbreak Saturday for the Forks Spartans in their quest to clinch a Class 2B state volleyball tournament berth and for the Sequim Wolves in their own mission to make the 2A tournament.

Forks dropped two winner-to-state District 4 tournament games at Adna High School.

First the Spartans fell 3-2 (25-22, 25-21, 17-25, 17-25, 15-9) to Napavine, getting back into the match with an 8-1 run to break a 17-17 tie and win the third set. But the Spartans couldn’t outlast Napavine and were bumped into a loser-out contest against Kalama.

Another slow start saw Forks trail Kalama 2-0 before another third-set win 25-14. But the Spartans couldn’t put together a rally, and fell 3-1.

Sammamish 3, Sequim 2

BREMERTON — The Wolves (11-7) went the distance with a state berth on the line in a loss to the Hawks.

Orting 3, Port Angeles 1

SAMMAMISH — The Roughriders closed out their campaign with a 26-24, 21-25, 25-17, 25-11 bi-district defeat against the Cardinals.

Port Angeles opened in good form in the first two games.

“We were excited, we served well and we put some blocks up and we were able to earn some points ourselves, getting kills instead of getting them off of mistakes by Orting,” coach Alyssa Wetzler said.

Orting changed how they attacked the Riders on serve, dropping in aces in the third and fourth sets to take the match.

“They had some good serves that dropped right in the seam and they started picking up our attack down the line,” Wetzler said.

Josephine Edgington totaled five aces, three kills and one block assist for the Riders (4-12).

Jasmine Messinger added seven kills, two digs, a perfect pass and an ace.

Mary Halberg had two aces, 13 digs, four kills, a stuff block and a block assist.

Natalie Tenneson added a solo block, a block assist and three kills.

“The season went really well,” Wetzler said of her first season in charge of her alma mater. “Our seniors set the tone on being leaders, being strong and being good humans and making the game of volleyball fun and competitive every time we stepped on the court.”
