SEQUIM — Sequim dug deep in its final set, rallying from a 16-7 deficit to close out Kingston in four games, 21-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-20, in an Olympic League volleyball match Tuesday.

The win kept the Wolves (5-2, 5-3) in third place overall, second place in the Class 2A standings and a game ahead of Kingston (4-3, 4-5).

Sequim coach Jennie Weber Heilman said serving runs lifted the Wolves in the win.

“In the second game, Arianna Stovall had a seven-point serving run that helped change the momentum,” Webber Heilman said. “She also was playing well at the net. She had a game. She had four stuff blocks, five kills and served 19 of 21 with two aces.”

Sydney Clark and Brianna Palenik came up big at the service line in the fourth set.

Clark had 27 assists and served 13-for-13 with two aces.

“Clark got a four-point service run, Palenik got a five-point run with three aces,” Webber Heilman said.

“Brianna had six kills, six digs and she served 13-for-16 with five aces.

“We caught up within a couple of servers, and it was nice to see we didn’t fall apart and have to go to a fifth set.”

Jolene Vaara added 10 kills, five digs, three stuff blocks and served 9-for-9 with an ace.

Tiffany Lam had an acrobatic five digs.

“She made some some pretty great saves. She was moving really well on the court,” Webber Heilman said.

Kassi Montero added seven kills, five digs and served 14-for-16 with two aces for Sequim.

The Wolves visit North Mason tonight.

Port Angeles 3, Bremerton 1

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders mixed up their lineups and played a new defensive set in a 25-11, 22-25, 25-23, 25-12 win over the cellar-dwelling Knights.

“We had an opportunity to change the lineup around, put people in different spots, so we utilized it,” coach Alyssa Wetzler said.

“We’ve been learning a new defense, really working on fine-tuning the specifics and being in the right spot.”

Wetzler said Port Angeles received some solid spot serving from a number of players.

“Josephine Edgington did a great job spot serving, as well as Bridget Mead and Mary Halberg,” Wetzler said.

Happy birthday

“It was Mary Halberg’s birthday [Tuesday], so it was a fun day. I think the student section sang Happy Birthday to her.

“We also had Karma Williams make her season debut. She got some free ball passes up and attacked the ball for sure.

“And Jordin Dunaway is normally a middle, and she played as an outside hitter.”

Port Angeles (3-4, 3-5) visits Kingston tonight.
