EDMONTON, Alberta — The Port Angeles Lefties salvaged the final game Sunday of their three-game series against the Edmonton Riverhawks, getting great pitching and a home run from BY Choi in a 7-1 win.
The Lefties lost Friday, 5-1, and lost Saturday, 8-5.
A trio of Lefties pitchers held the Riverhawks, a new team in the West Coast League, to six hits. Liam Paddack (Spokane College) started and went two innings, allowing two hits and two walks but no runs. He struck out three. He got credit for the win. Aaron Rettew (Cal Poly, Pomona) also went two innings, allowing two hits, an earned run and a walk while striking out one. Andrew Hauck (Utah Valley) had his best game of the year, going the final five innings and allowing two hits and no walks. He struck out three. He got credit for a save because the score was 2-1 when he entered the game.
Choi went 3-for-6 on the day with a home run and a stolen base. Isaiah Munoz (University of Hawaii) was 2-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored. Hunter Kirkpatrick (San Diego Community College) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base. Kemet Brown (Cal State, Pomona) hit a double and drove in two runs. He also walked and stole a base.
Catcher Colin Fisher, playing in his first game for the Lefties, had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Trey Maeker (Fordham) had a hit, a run scored, an RBI and a walk.
Friday, Saturday games
The Lefties didn’t find the Riverhawks’ Will Rogers any laughing matter in the Friday and Saturday games.
Rogers, an Arizona State University sophomore, hit home runs in both games to help beat the Lefties.
In Friday’s game, Rogers and Mitch Wood each hit solo shots.
The Lefties actually pitched well other than the two big blows. Andres Quinones (Cal State, San Bernardino) started, went 6⅓ innings, giving up eight hits, one walk and three earned runs. He took the loss.
Port Angeles only managed five hits. Brown had a pair of hits while Weston Peninger (Howard College) and Maeker each had doubles, with Maeker scoring the Lefties’ only run of the game.
Big innings have been one of the Lefties’ problems so far this season and in Saturday’s game, it came back to bite them again. The Lefties pitched well until the bottom of the sixth inning when they gave up a seven-run inning, highlighted by a grand slam by Rogers and a two-run double by Aaron Stinnett.
Zane Petty (Texas Tech) started, going 2⅓ innings and allowing one earned run for Port Angeles. He walked two and struck out four. Dillon Dribell (Northern Oklahoma) went three innings, giving up two earned runs on one hit and three walks. He struck out two and ended up taking the loss. Nathan Criswell (Long Beach State) and Megum Fukuda (New Mexico Military Institute) pitched well, going a combined 2⅓ innings and giving up no hits and no runs, though they did walk five batters.
At the plate, Munoz went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs, while Riley Parker (Cal State, San Bernardino) was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Choi had a hit, a run scored, an RBI and two walks, while Evan Jilbert (Edmonds College) hit a double.
The Lefties (5-6 West Coast League, 7-7 overall) have today off for the long trip back home from Edmonton. They return to Civic Field at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday to play the Bend Elks.
