WEST COAST LEAGUE: Lefties swept by first-place Apple Sox

WENATCHEE — Despite a grand slam home run from Jeremy Giesegh, the Lefties fell again to first-place Wenatchee 13-5, getting swept in the three-game series.

Wenatchee pounded out 14 hits in Sunday night’s game and had 25 baserunners against a quartet of Lefties’ pitchers. Starter Brad Johnson took the loss.

Giesegh (Cal State, San Bernardino) hit his grand slam in the seventh to bring the Lefties within striking range at 9-5, but the Apple Sox, who are 11-4 and tied with Portland for first, scored four in the eighth to pull away. It was Giesegh’s second home run of the season.

Tommy Markey (Fordham) was 2-for-4, while Jay O’Neill (Georgia Gwinnett) was 1-for-1 with three walks, a run scored and a stolen base. O’Neill is batting .400 on the season, fourth-best in the West Coast League. His on-base percentage is .489.

Tyler Shulman (Harvard) had a hit, a run scored and an RBI.

While the pitching staff got touched up by the Apple Sox bats, Jake Cumming (Fernley, Nev.) did well to keep Wenatchee at bay in the middle innings as Port Angeles tried to get back in the game. He pitched four innings, allowing three hits and one earned run with zero walks.

The Lefties (2-10 in WCL, 5-10 overall) had Monday off for a travel day. They begin a three-game home series against the Kelowna Falcons (4-11 in WCL) at Civic Field and its new electronic video board at 6:35 p.m. today.
