WRESTLING: Port Angeles’ Borde, Forks’ Baker second at Hammerhead Invite

Forks achieves top finish of any 1A team, was seventh overall

BREMERTON — Going up against wrestlers from 3A and 4A schools, Forks’ Hayden Baker and Port Angeles’ Adam Borde both made it to the championship bouts of their weight divisions at the prestigious Hammerhead Invite, held at the Kitsap Sun Pavilion this past weekend.

Borde won three matches, including an 8-3 decision over Forks’ Colton Duncan in the 138-pound division. He was beaten by Xavier Eaglin from 4A South Kitsap in a 9-3 decision in the championship bout. Duncan went on to finish third, winning his final match with an 11-4 decision over Diego Clemen of Bremerton. Duncan went 5-1 on the day with his only loss to Port Angeles’ Borde.

Baker, meanwhile, won four straight matches by pins at 170 pounds in his path to the championship bout. He was finally beaten by Kyle Brosius from 4A Union 15-3.

Forks had the top finish of any 1A team at the Hammerhead Invite and was seventh overall with 136 team points. Every team ahead of Forks was a 4A school. Union won the meet with 232 team points.

Port Angeles was 35th with 65 team points and Port Townsend was 33rd with 70 points. A total of 94 boys and girls teams competed in the massive event.

Port Angeles had a champion in Lillian Halberg. Just a freshman, she was the JV girls champion at 130 pounds, winning three straight matches. She won her championship bout with a 14-7 decision over Naya Rogers of River Ridge.

Forks had a total of five wrestlers who placed, plus others who scored team points.

The Spartans’ Hayden Queen had a busy weekend, wrestling seven matches at 182 pounds. He went 6-1 over Friday and Saturday and finished third in his weight division. His one loss was a 5-2 decision to Logan Stafford, a South Kitsap wrestler.

Other Forks wrestlers who placed include Andre Santos-Delacruz, who was fourth at 120 pounds after winning four matches and losing two, while Dalton Kilmer was fifth at 126 pounds, winning five matches and losing two.

In addition, Forks’ Wesley Camacho won four matches at 126 pounds, Ariel Morales won four matches at 132 pounds and Bryan Elena won two matches at 160 pounds.

Port Townsend’s best finish was by Kyle Caldwell, who finished fourth at 195 pounds. Caldwell went 3-2 on the weekend and was beaten in a close 4-3 decision in the third-place match by Kupono Planesi of Kentlake.

The Redhawks’ Logan Massie won two matches at 145 pounds and Robbie Collier went 4-2 on the day (one of those losses was to Forks’ Baker) at 182 pounds. Wes Blue won two matches at 182 pounds. Port Townsend’s Savannah Hoffman finished sixth in the girls’ 120-pound JV division, winning two matches.

For Port Angeles, Scott Hedin won two matches at 120 pounds, Leslie Worthey won three matches at 220 pounds and Josh Boe won four matches at 145 pounds, all scoring points for the Roughriders.

Forks girls

LYNDEN — Forks’ Karen Ensastegui-Salazar won a pair of matches at the Lynden Pride of the Lady Lyons meet and finished sixth at 100 pounds.

Annhelica Wells won three matches at 110 pounds but wasn’t able to place in her crowded weight division.

The Spartans had numerous wrestlers with at least two wins.

The Spartans’ Iesha Johnson won two matches at 110 pounds, and Aspen Rondeau won two matches at 130 pounds, Aspen Rondeau won two at 130 pounds, Litzy Recinos won two at 145 pounds and Eugenia Elena won two at 145 pounds.
