WRESTLING REGIONALS: Spartans dominate regional meet, send 16 grapplers to state

12 other wrestlers from North Olympic Peninsula head to Mat Classic

KALAMA — The Forks boys wrestling team added yet another trophy to its impressive 2022-23 season, winning the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Region 1 1B/2B championship by a wide margin.

The Spartans won with 280.5 points, well ahead of second-place Rainier, which had 119.

The Spartans go to the Mat Classic state championships next weekend as the No. 2-ranked 2B team in the state in the Washington Wrestling Report just behind Tonasket and just ahead of Granger.

Meanwhile, the Forks girls finished third as a team at their regional.

The Spartans boys racked up five regional weight division champions. Jesus Garcia-Dominguez took first at 113 pounds, Kevin Camacho-Roldan at 132, Kaleb Blanton at 152, Nate Dahlgren at 182 and Sloan Tumaua at 220.

Four other Spartans made it to the regional championship match in their weight classes, finishing second. They were Conner Demorest at 126 pounds, Walker Rondeau at 132 (he was beaten in the championship by Camacho-Roldan in a 7-4 decision), Colton Hunt at 138 and Walker Wheeler at 145.

Coming in third place were Adrian Sanchez at 152 pounds and Sebastian Qunneke at 195.

Other Forks wrestlers who placed included:

• Mason Leinan, fourth, 160 pounds.

• Bryan Lucas, fifth 113 pounds.

• Braden Camacho, fifth, 120 pounds.

• Aiden Ivey, fifth, 160 pounds.

• Jon Parker Jr., fifth, 170 pounds.

At the 2B level, the top five in all these weights qualify for the Mat Classic, so Forks will be sending 16 wrestlers to state.

Counting regionals, the Spartans have won nine tournaments this season.

The Forks girls had 75 team points. W.F. West won the region with 160, while Washougal had 95 points.

Forks girls didn’t win any of their weight divisions, but several girls placed.

Lillianna Galeana, 105 pounds, and Miley Blanton, 120 pounds, both made it to the championship matches in their weight divisions and finished second.

Peyton Johnson came in third at 115 pounds, qualifying for the Mat Classic along with Galeana and Blanton.

LaRayne Blair was fifth at 100 and Natalie Horejsi was fifth at 110. Flora Horejsi was sixth at 105.

Port Angeles boys

BELFAIR — The Port Angeles boys qualified three wrestlers for the Mat Classic next week at the WIAA 2A Region 2 regionals held at North Mason High School.

Alex Burrow finished fourth at 113 pounds, Raymond Rodriguez fourth at 120 and Ethan Abrams fourth at 145. All will move on to the state championships. Going as an alternate will be Thomas Arand, who finished fifth at regionals at 182 pounds.

As a team, Port Angeles finished 10th with 45 points. Orting won the Region 2 regionals with 367 points.

Port Angeles girls

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — The Port Angeles girls wrestling team qualified two wrestlers for the Mat Classic during the Region 1 regionals.

Julia Baeder made it to the championship match of her 130-pound weight division, finishing second.

Faye Dachs came in third at 110 pounds, also qualifying for the state finals.

Natalie Johnson came in fifth at 100 pounds and Willow Harvey fifth at 125.

The Port Angeles girls finished eighth as a team with 52 points. White River won the Region 1 regionals with 149.

Sequim boys

BELFAIR — The Sequim boys qualified Cayden Beauregard at 106 pounds for the Mat Classic. Beauregard finished third at 106 pounds at the 2A Region 2 regionals.

Ryan Spelker was fifth at 113 pounds and Ari Skov was fifth at 170 pounds. They will attend the Mat Classic as alternates.

East Jefferson boys

CASTLE ROCK — The East Jefferson boys sent two wrestlers into the championship matches of their weight divisions at the 1A Region 1 regionals.

James Henery made the championship match at 152 while Devon Bennett-Anderson did the same at 220. Both wrestlers finished second and will move on next week to the Mat Classic.

Three other Rivals wrestlers will attend the Mat Classic as alternates. Isaiah Johnson at 120 pounds, Grady White at 126 and Manaseh Lanphear-Ramirez at 145 all came in fourth place in their divisions.

Lars Wakefield also placed fifth at 285.

East Jefferson finished sixth at regionals with 89.5 points. Mount Baker took the Region 1 title with 209 points.

East Jefferson girls

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — East Jefferson’s Mi Amada Lanpher-Ramirez qualified for the Mat Classic by making it to the championship match at 115 pounds at the Region 1 regionals, ultimately finishing second.

The East Jefferson girls will also send three wrestlers as alternates.

Finishing fourth and qualifying as alternates were Chloe Lampert at 120 pounds, Ivy Hill at 130 and Melody Douglas at 155.

East Jefferson finished sixth at the Region 1 regionals with 62 points.

The Mat Classic is a two-day boys and girls five-classification tournament that begins Friday at the Tacoma Dome.
