PREP FOOTBALL: Port Townsend, Quilcene lose, Crescent rolls to big win

SUMNER — Port Townsend found out why Cascade Christian is the fifth-ranked Class 1A team in the state.

The Redhawks, who came into the game red-hot with five straight wins, were beaten on the road by the Cougars 42-0.

“They have a lot of speed on their team. They’re one of the better teams we’ve seen all year,” said coach Alex Heilig.

The Redhawks (5-1, 6-3) came into the game averaging 48 points a game over their past five wins. But, the Cougars were able to contain the Redhawks’ high-octane offense.

“Their front four is pretty quick and pretty strong,” said Heilig.

Heilig said the Redhawks (5-1, 6-3) are now concentrating fully on a crucial game at home at 7 p.m. Friday against Charles Wright. Port Townsend needs to win to secure a No. 2 playoff position from District 3. Charles Wright comes into the game 4-2.

If Charles Wright wins, it would likely set up a three-way tie for the second slot with Port Townsend and Klahowya. That could entail a play-in game if that happens, Heilig said.

“We’re looking at taking care of business this week,” Heilig said.

If Port Townsend ends up the undisputed No. 2 seed out of District 3, the Redhawks will play the No. 1 seed out of District 4. That could be Montesano or La Center.

MAPLE VALLEY — Quilcene couldn’t generate any running game and got rolled in the second half by Rainier Christian 40-26.

A 30-yard pass from Andy Johnston to Robert Comstock gave the Rangers a short-lived lead in the second half at 12-8. But, the Mustangs scored 24 points in the fourth quarter to put the Rangers away late.

“We didn’t have a very good day, they played smarter and harer than us,” said coach Trey Beathard. He thought the Rangers’ 70-28 win the week before might have hurt his team and made them overconfident.

The Rangers were able to throw the ball, as quarterback Andy Johnston had three touchdown passes, but they were only able to generate 50 yards rushing.

Jarod Smith also had a 44-yard TD catch and Olin Reynolds had an 8-yard touchdown pass. Ben Bruner had a 5-yard TD run.

The loss leaves Quilcene (3-2, 6-2) tied for second with Rainier Christian in the SeaTac 1B 8-man league, though the Mustangs have a head-to-head tiebreaker. Beathard said Quilcene may play the Washington School for the Deaf in the postseason, but that school doesn’t play on weekends, so Quilcene is still trying to find a day for the game.

Crescent 64, Tulalip Heritage 6

MARYSVILLE— The Crescent Loggers used a stifling defense to smother Tulalip on the road for a 64-6 win.

“Our defense was unbelievable,” said coach Brian Shimko. “It was a good game.”

Crescent’s K.C. Spencer had a pair of interceptions as part of that effort, giving him more than 20 for his high school career, which Shimko believes is a state record.

Spencer, who has played much of the season with a cast on his arm, also threw for 205 yards and rushed for 75. Eric Emery also had a 35-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown to open the game.

Jacob Baillargeon and Noah Leonard each had two touchdowns.

Crescent (1-2, 4-4), is the No. 3 seed in the Northwest 1B League and will play Oakville on the road Saturday in the first round of the playoffs.
