Lions roaring into city championship

PORT ANGELES — Lions clinched the National League title and a berth in the 12U Cal Ripken baseball championship game with a 9-8 extra-innings win Thursday against Rotary.

Rotary jumped to a quick two-run lead in the first inning on hits from Brayden Emery and Jake Felton.

Lions got one back in the first after a Micheal Soule double, and took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the bottom of the third on a Daniel Cable triple.

Rotary battled back with a four-run fourth inning and pushed its lead to 8-5 with two scores in the sixth.

With Lions needing at least three runs to extend the game, Derek Sparks led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to third on another Soule double.

Dru Clark brought Sparks home on an infield single, and Naaman McGuffey delivered a clutch two-run double to tie the game.

Rotary had a chance in the top of the seventh when Connor Hickey led off with a base hit and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Edun Bailey, but Lions’ defense came up with two big outs to get out of the jam.

In the bottom half of the inning, Eli Cyr drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch, then tagged and advanced to third on an Elisha Howard fly ball before scoring the winning run on a Race Ford walk-off sacrifice fly to left field.

Lions (13-1) have won five straight games since a May 1 loss to Elks.

Hi-Tech hitters hot

PORT ANGELES — Hi-Tech hit the ball well in a 16-5 12U Cal Ripken League win against Rotary.

Hits in last Monday’s game came from Piers Davis, Kayden McVaugh and Austin Sage.

Milo Whitman led the Swain’s defense at second base and Mitchell Knutson made a diving catch in left field. Gavin Guerraro and Trevor Shumway helped Knutson seal off the outfield.

Bo Bradow also had two doubles for Swain’s and Joel Wood and Whitman each added hits.

Those four hits were all Swain’s could produce off First Federal pitcher Cole Williams.

Williams was backed up by errorless defense from shortstop Riley Haller and second baseman Elandon Washburn.

Jordan Reed has two hits for First Federal.
